Drain Engineering

Our communities rely on drain engineering to control irrigation and flooding and to prevent water reserves from becoming polluted. From site visits and preparing construction drawings, to attending public hearings, observing on-site construction, and the final inspection, our skilled civil engineers at BMJ Engineers & Surveyors. Inc. are the leading experts in drain engineering in Michigan. In fact, our company was founded on it.

Our BMJ engineers conduct the survey, design rural and urban drainage and soil erosion control measures, and organize and manage the construction of county drain projects under Michigan’s Drain Code requirements.

The Michigan Drain Code is the statutory framework under which rural and urban drainage problems are solved by Michigan’s drain commissioners. Petitioned projects, maintenance, preparing assessments, and special work offer unique challenges to the drain office. BMJ has premier expertise in the drain code, with over forty years of experience in accomplishing projects for drain commissioners in almost every Michigan county. BMJ works diligently to address the issues of land drainage from identification to resolution.

BMJ’s successful county and intercounty drain projects are many. The Northwest Drain was a $7.7 million dollar reconstruction of a portion of the Tuscola County drainage system which included 32 miles of channel, 13 bridge spans, and two submerged outlets in Saginaw Bay. Special consideration for fish spawning periods and bald eagle nesting grounds was provided in two nature conservation areas. Additional projects include the Duff Drain in Sanilac County, as well as intercounty drain projects such as the Black River IC Drain (Sanilac, St. Clair and Lapeer counties) and the Richmond Columbus Drain (Macomb County and St. Clair County).
